The Washington Wizards are in search of a new president of basketball operations and general manager after the dismissal of Tommy Sheppard. In the meantime, other NBA teams have been informed who to contact for business matters.
According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the NBA sent a memo telling the other 29 teams that VP of player development and engagement John Thompson III and assistant general manager Brett Greenberg are the people of contact for the Wizards front office. Neither Thompson nor Greenberg has been appointed an interim title.
Wizards owner Ted Leonsis stated the next GM will come from “outside the organization.”
Thompson, 57, joined the Wizards organization in 2019 after 22 years as a college basketball coach. He followed in his father’s footsteps and was the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team for 12 years.
Greenberg has been the Wizards’ assistant general manager since 2019. He was 33 years old at the time of his promotion. However, he’s been with the organization since 2008. At one point, he was the director of basketball analytics and salary cap management.
The team will likely have a new GM before the June 22 NBA draft. It may be in the team’s best interest not to make any significant decisions prior. Meanwhile, there is the NBA draft lottery. So it will be interesting to see what impact Thompson or Greenberg would make that will be noticeable to fans.
