NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expects an announcement in May for the sale of the Washington Commanders. Goodell appeared on ESPN ahead of Thursday’s NFL Draft.
“That progress will hopefully lead to them being comfortable to announce some type of a transaction probably by the middle of May or late May,” Goodell said, per Mark Maske of The Washington Post.
It’s been nearly three weeks since the group led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris agreed to a $6.05 billion deal to buy the Commanders from Daniel Snyder. However, the deal has yet to be finalized.
An announcement in May could come in time for NFL owners to put the sale to vote at their league meeting in Minneapolis, next month.
The Commanders have been up for sale since November. Snyder hired Bank of America Securities to help facilitate the process.
Josh Harris is a native of the DC Area. He was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland just outside the nation’s capital. He entered The Field School, a prep school in DC. Harris has a net worth of $5.9 billion, per Forbes.
Harris’ group to buy the Commanders includes fellow DC area billionaire Mithell Rales and NBA legend and entrepreneur Magic Johnson. The agreement between Harris and Snyder is non-exclusive which allows Snyder to field other bids.
Former Duke basketball player Brian Davis has vowed he remains in contention to buy the Commanders with a $7 billion bid. Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos claims is “still in the hunt,” as well.
