Major League Baseball has postponed Thursday’s afternoon game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals due to hazardous smog from the ongoing Canada wildfires. The smoke has swept through the Northeast region of the United States.
The air quality is poor in the nation’s capital. The Washington, D.C. area is under Code Purple, with health officials advising to avoid all outdoor activities. The National Zoo in D.C. closed on Thursday as a result.
The Diamondbacks and Nationals will make up the game on June 22. The Nationals will lose an off-day ahead of its west coast trip to San Diego and Seattle. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks will have to travel back to Washington for one day in between trips from Milwaukee to San Francisco.
The Canada wildfires have produced smoke clouds that have traveled South to the United States. New York and Philadelphia have been enduring the smog all this week. Wednesday, MLB postponed the Yankees’ home game against the Chicago White Sox and the Phillies’ home game against the Detroit Tigers.
The Nationals have bumped their starting rotation back a day, as the team is scheduled for a weekend series in Atlanta against the Braves. Washington’s ace, Josiah Gray, will start Friday. MacKenzie Gore will take the mound on Saturday, and Trevor Williams on Sunday.
