The Utah Jazz have made guard Collin Sexton available for a trade, per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Several teams may show interest, including the Washington Wizards.
According to Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, the Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Hornets, and Milwaukee Bucks are among the teams that could have interest in Sexton.
The Jazz appear ready to move on from Sexton just one season into his four-year, $70.9 million contract. Sexton emerged during his first three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, he has struggled the last two seasons with injuries.
Sexton missed 71 games with a torn meniscus in the 2021-22 season. Then, he got shipped from the Cavaliers to the Jazz in a sign-and-trade that sent Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland. Last season, Sexton was limited to 48 games due to a lingering hamstring injury. He averaged 14.3 points and 2.9 assists.
Despite the limited action, he shot a career-high 50.6% from the field. He raised his three-point shooting to 39.3% — the highest since his rookie season.
The Wizards have been linked to Sexton before. Washington reportedly was interested in Sexton last offseason before he agreed to the sign-and-trade between the Cavs and Jazz.
Washington may need a scoring guard following the trade of Bradley Beal. The Wizards are embracing a rebuild under its new front office regime led by president Michael Winger.
The Wizards are shipping Beal to the Phoenix Suns for a package that includes 12-time All-Star Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, two draft swaps, and several second-round draft picks.
Paul expects to be rerouted to another team in a trade or have his contract bought out. Meanwhile, Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma opted out of his $13 million player option for next season, making him a free agent. Wizards center Kristaps Porzingis is also facing a decision on his player option worth $36 million.
Expectations are the Wizards will move forward with its rebuild by becoming a team that takes on unlikeable contracts and obtains draft picks. Sexton is owed another $54.45 million over the next three seasons.
If the Wizards are interested in Sexton, Washington would likely command Utah to give some draft capital in addition to taking on Sexton’s contract.
The NBA Draft is Thursday. Both the Wizards and Jazz appear interested in a guard prospect. Thus it would be interesting to see how aggressive the Wizards would be in pursuing Sexton.
