Former NFL player and current Commanders broadcaster Fred Smoot remains in custody of the Loudoun County (Virginia) Adult Detention Center on a civil misdemeanor charge of “failure to comply with support obligation,” TMZ Sports was the first to report.
Smoot turned himself in on Thursday. The 44-year-old Smoot is a contract employee of the Washington Commanders. He provides postgame analysis for the team. However, former Washington tight end Rick “Doc” Walker will replace Smoot for Friday’s postgame coverage after the Commanders’ preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns, according to The Washington Post.
Fred Smoot last played in the NFL in 2009. He transitioned into media, primarily covering the Commanders on the radio and TV.
Smoot was a second-round draft of Washington in 2001. He played seven seasons as a cornerback in Washington over two stints. He appeared in 104 games in the Burgundy and Gold, recording 18 interceptions.
Smoot also played two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He had three interceptions in 25 games with the Vikings. The 2006 “Love Boat” incident highlighted Smoot’s stint with Minnesota.
Smoot pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges, stemming from a group of Vikings players hiring prostitutes for a sex party on a boat. He also received six months probation for a DUI charge in 2013. In 2014, he was arrested and charged with domestic simple assault. However, he later was cleared of the charge.
