As the Washington Commanders inch closer to its season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, there is some apprehension about the availabilities of two of its stars.
On Tuesday, speaking with the media, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera remained mum about defensive end Chase Young and wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Any update about their status for Week 1 won’t be revealed until Wednesday.
Wednesday is when the Commanders are required by the NFL to release an injury report. Washington’s injury report will shine a light on where the two players stand.
Young suffered a stinger in the Commanders’ first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. He played four snaps on the opening defensive drive before heading to the sideline to be checked on by the medical staff.
Young did not play the rest of the preseason. While he has done some drills in practice, Chase Young hadn’t been cleared by doctors for contact. Young was scheduled last week to see a doctor for an update, per Rivera. But the coach isn’t providing details until the injury report comes out.
Meanwhile, McLaurin suffered a turf toe injury in Washington’s preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens — the second of three preseason games. McLaurin’s injury occurred as he got tackled from behind on the Commanders’ final offensive drive of the first half.
McLaurin did not practice the final weeks of training camp. According to ESPN’s John Keim, McLaurin was in a walking boot until last Tuesday. Initially, the team was optimistic McLaurin could play against the Cardinals.
A turf toe injury usually takes a couple of weeks. The Commanders kept McLaurin off his feet to help the healing process.
Rivera said there is “absolutely” some gamesmanship in not revealing information about McLaurin or Young. However, Washington will peal back the curtain with Wednesday’s injury report.
