Wizards lose Landry Shamet, Daniel Gafford to injuries just ahead of training camp

The Washington Wizards will start training camp down two of its core players this week. News broke within minutes of injuries to guard Landry Shamet and center Daniel Gafford on Sunday.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Shamet broke one of his big toes. The veteran expects to be out for two to four weeks.

Shortly afterward, Josh Robbins of The Athletic reported that Gafford fell during a pickup game, injuring his elbow. Gafford will not need surgery but expects to be out for two to four weeks.

Gafford enters his fourth season with the Wizards with expectations of starting after Kristaps Porzingis got traded to the Boston Celtics this past summer. This year is the first of his three-year, $40.182 million extension.

Meanwhile, the Wizards acquired Shamet from the Phoenix Suns in the Bradley Beal trade. Shamet will be in the guard rotation for Washington.

Hopefully, neither injury lingers. Michael Muscala and Taj Gibson are behind Gafford at the center. The Wizards’ 2022 first-round draft pick, Johnny Davis, could fill in for Shamet’s minutes.
