Maryland co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin was arrested Saturday morning in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence, per Taylor Lyons of The Diamondback.
The Maryland Terrapins were on a bye this week following back-to-back losses to Ohio State and Illinois.
Sumlin was arrested just before 1 a.m. on Saturday on U.S. Highway 301 in Tampa, Florida. He refused a breathalyzer test, per Hillsborough County police report. Sumlin faces at least a one-year license suspension as a result.
He pleaded not guilty and waived the arrangement. The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison.
“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment,” a Maryland football spokesperson said in a statement.
Kevin Sumlin joined head coach Mike Locksley’s coaching staff this season.
After being a star linebacker at Purdue, Sumlin entered coaching in 1989, spending nearly 20 years as an assistant. He eventually got his chance to be a head coach at the University of Houston for four seasons, at Texas A&M for six, and three seasons at Arizona.
