Referee block springs Maryland RB for 75-yard TD run

Maryland Terrapins running back Roman Hemby is used to scoring touchdowns. The senior has 22 touchdowns in his collegiate career. However, he may have never gotten one like Saturday’s score against the Indiana Hoosiers.

With the Terps trailing 21-14 in the third quarter, Hemby broke loose a 75-yard touchdown run that eventually tied the game. Upon further review, Hemby got through the second level of the Hoosiers’ defense thanks to an accidental block by an official.

Just as Hemby got to the second level, Indiana defensive back D’Angelo Pounds tried to step into the gap to make a tackle. Unfortunately for him, the umpire was in the direct path of Hemby, and he got out of the way, bumping and knocking down Pounds.

Pounds represented Indiana’s last line of defense. With him out of the picture, Hemby had nothing but pay dirt in his sights. What a referee block
