The nation’s No. 1 recruit Azzi Fudd of St. John’s College High School (Washington, DC) committed to the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. Fudd announced her decision Wednesday on Instagram live. Today is also her 18th birthday.
Fudd is a two-time All-Met Player of the Year, winning the award as a freshman and sophomore. She also won the National Gatorade Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2019.
Fudd becomes the fourth No. 1 recruit in the last five years to commit to UCONN.
During her time at St. John’s, Fudd guided the Cadets to two Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships, three D.C. State Athletic Association championships and a finals appearance at the Geico Nationals.
Fudd tore her ACL and MCL during a spring 2019 USA Basketball event in Colorado. She returned eight months after the injury, leading St. John’s to a city title last season.
She is also a two-time gold medal winner, winning the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Women’s Americas Championship and the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Fudd chose UCONN over UCLA. Maryland and Louisville were also considered. She received her first scholarship offer from Maryland while in the sixth grade.
Fudd’s mother Katie Fudd, then known as Katie-Smrcka-Duffy, starred at Georgetown. She was drafted by Sacramento Monarchs, becoming the first Georgetown player to be drafted in the WNBA. Her father Tim played at American University.
Azzi Fudd, a 5-foot-11 guard/forward has been compared to the likes of Maya Moore, who starred at UCONN before becoming a No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA.
