The Washington Commanders sought out and re-signed most of their own free agents that they wanted. All except one. Kick returner/wide receiver DeAndre Carter remains a free agent and while the Commanders would like to re-sign him, Carter is garnering interest from other teams.
According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, Carter visited with the Chicago Bears on Monday. Carter will also have a visit Tuesday with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera recently spoke of Carter’s situation with Washington.
“I think we’re all just kind of waiting,” Rivera said per The Athletic’s Ben Standig. “You know what you want, you know where guys fit. Now it’s a matter of getting things worked out.”
Last season, DeAndre Carter found his footing with Washington primarily as a returner. He returned 36 kickoffs for a career-high 904 yards, including a 101-yard touchdown return in Week 4.
But he also emerged as a wide receiver. Playing in all 17 games, Carter had 505 offensive snaps. He had a career-high 24 catches, 296 receiving yards and three touchdowns catches.
Carter was a valuable player for Washington in 2021. He was Washington’s most lethal returner in recent memory. His ability to also play wide receiver is an added value.
However, after being on eight teams since going undrafted in 2015, Carter’s stock has never been this high. It’s hard to blame him for seeking to cash in. What his value is out on the market will go a long way to see if he returns to Washington.
