This season is the first of the Washington Commanders. The NFL franchise played under the “Washington Redskins” from 1937 until 2020. Washington dropped the moniker after an outcry from Native American groups and team sponsors who deemed the name racist and disparaging to Indigenous people.
Washington was one of the NFL’s most storied franchises and strongest brands. Thus, some still have to get used to the name change. That includes CBS Sports’ lead play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz, who had a slip-up that drew a hilarious reaction from his booth-mate Tony Romo.
Nantz explained the current NFC playoff scenario during CBS’ broadcast of the Minnesota Vikings-Green Bay Packers game. Saying the former team’s name is taboo now. Nantz initially didn’t even notice his slip. He continued describing the NFC playoff scenario.
Many Washington fans still refer to the old moniker and refuse to address the team by its new name.
Nevertheless, fans are more focused on the late-season collapse that just transpired. The Commanders were eliminated from playoff contention Sunday after losing to the Cleveland Browns with the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers winning their games.
