Landon Collins switching jersey to No. 26; Jimmy Moreland takes No. 20

Amid the Washington Football Team’s roster cuts, there is a pair of jersey number switches involving two defensive backs. Safety Landon Collins is switching to No. 26, according to Ben Standig of The Athletic. The number became available with the release of Adrian Peterson.

Meanwhile, cornerback Jimmy Moreland will switch to No. 20 previously worn by Collins.

It’s well-noted Collins is a huge Sean Taylor fan. Collins wore No. 26 in college at Alabama — the same number Taylor wore in college at Miami. When Collins entered the NFL with the New York Giants he took on the No. 21, the number Taylor made most famous while playing in the NFL with Washington.

However, the number has been taken out of Washington’s rotation since Taylor’s tragic death in 2007. When Collins signed with Washington in 2019, his childhood favorite team, he campaigned to get an opportunity to wear Taylor’s old number to no avail. Thus, he opted for No. 20 with Peterson already on the roster. Now with Peterson out, Landon Collins gets to continue his connection to his favorite football player.
