The Washington Nationals are the hottest team in baseball since May 24, winning 28 of their last 39 games after cruising to a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals.

A large reason to their surge that now has them atop of the NL wild card standings, is their offense. They are averaging 5.67 runs per game since May 24. That offensive explosion has been sparked by the long ball.

Brian Dozier’s solo blast in the second inning Sunday was the 21st straight game the Nationals hit a home run, extending their franchise record.

Victor Robles also added a solo homer in the seventh.

The Nationals are now four games away from tying the National League record of 25 games, which is currently owned by the 2016 St. Louis Cardinals, 2016 San Diego Padres, and 1998 Atlanta Braves. The New York Yankees just set the MLB record this season at 31 games, ending back on Jul. 2.

Washington is taking their home run streak into the All-Star break. With a loaded lineup, it’s plausible to see this Nats team continue beyond the break. The Nationals have seven batters in double figures in home runs. That does not include Ryan Zimmerman, who missed 62 games, and Trea Turner, who missed 39 games, due to injuries.
