The Washington Nationals have placed right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain, according to Jesse Doughtery of The Washington Post. The club recalled reliever Andres Machado from Triple-A Rochester.
Fedde’s placement on the IL comes at an inopportuned time. The Nationals have caught fire some winning 10 of 11 games before losing back-to-back games to the Miami Marlins.
Fedde had earned his way into the starting rotation with Stephen Strasburg injured. Fedde had three straight scoreless outings, through 19 innings — all wins. However, he allowed five off six hits and two home runs in his last outing on June 23 against Philadelphia. Washington won the game 13-12.
He was scheduled to start Tuesday against the New York Mets. Thus, the Nationals will have to reshuffle their rotation, who is already without Strasburg.
Still, this season has been a major step for the former UNLV standout. In his fifth season, Fedde already has a career-high 50 strikeouts. His 3.90 ERA is the best of his career as well, pitching 55.1 innings with 11 starts.
