Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera shot down the importance of the team’s depth chart revealed Tuesday. When asked about JD McKissic being listed as the No. 1 running back, Rivera quickly pointed out the depth chart was unofficial.
“The running back group is going to be by committee,” Rivera said per Sam Fortier of the Washington Post. “…JD [McKissic], we just happened to put on the chart first.”
The various packages within the offense will dictate which running back will be on the field.
It was assumed rookie Antonio Gibson would be Washington’s featured back following the release of veteran Adrian Peterson. Peterson even endorsed Gibson on his way out. But, Tuesday’s depth chart reveal listed McKissic as the top back.
McKissic admitted after Tuesday’s practice he was unaware he was listed as the starter.
Gibson, McKissic and Peyton Barber each figure to play significant roles within offensive coordinator Scott Turner’s offense. Gibson possesses a more complete package than both McKissic and Barber.
Gibson’s speed, agility and ability to run in between the tackles displays the potential of him getting a heavy dose of work. However, he is learning the running back position after playing wide receiver primarily in college at Memphis.
