Trey Quinn won’t be signing to the Washington Football Team’s practice squad. Instead the young wide receiver is reuniting with Washington’s former head coach Jay Gruden in Jacksonville. Quinn signed to the Jaguars’ practice squad Sunday, according to Ben Standig of The Athletic.
Quinn was cut Saturday after two seasons in Washington.
Quinn, 24, was a seventh-round pick of Washington in 2018 while Gruden was head coach. He stood out in training camp and preseason earning him a spot as Washington’s slot wide receiver. However, he suffered an ankle injury in his NFL debut, limiting him to three games throughout the season.
Last season, Quinn’s snap counts dropped after Gruden was fired after five games. Still, Quinn appeared in 12 games before a concussion ended his season. Meanwhile, undrafted free agent Steven Sims Jr. emerged as a target favorite of quarterback Dwayne Haskins out of the slot in the final weeks of the season.
Quinn entered training camp this year with a new coaching staff led by head coach Ron Rivera and Sims locked in as the slot receiver. Thus, Quinn was unable to carve a spot to make Washington’s 53-man roster.
Quinn had 35 catches, 273 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games with Washington.
Now, he will continue his NFL career in Jacksonville where Gruden is the Jaguars offensive coordinator. The Jaguars have six wide receivers on their active roster, DJ Chark, Dede Westbrook, Keelan Cole, Chris Conley, Colin Johnson and rookie Laviska Shenault Jr.
