Kyle Smith’s time with Washington may already be up. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Washington has moved on from Smith and making changes to their college scouting department.
SI.com’s Chris Russell first reported Smith was parting ways with Washington sooner rather than later. But, La Canfora’s report suggests the separation has already happened.
The inevitable departure comes a year after Smith was promoted from director of college scouting to VP of player personnel. Smith had his fingerprints on the last couple of drafts for Washington. He ran lead in last year’s draft which included picks of Chase Young, Antonio Gibson and Kamren Curl.
However, Washington hired Martin Mayhew as general manager. Then, they added former Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney as VP of player personnel and football operations. Both Mayhew and Hurney will report to head coach Ron Rivera. Smith did not interview for GM.
Since the arrival of Rivera, Washington has been a coach-centric organization. Essentially, he has run the show. And Rivera wanted someone with more experienced than Smith, despite his recent track record. Mayhew and Hurney have close to 60 years experience.
With the writing on the wall, Smith recently hired an agent to look for opportunities around the league for the talented young executive.
