Washington Football Team announces practice squad highlighted by WR Cam Sims

A day after cutting their roster down to 53 players for the 2020 season, the Washington Football Team announced their first set of practice squad signings. The list includes wide receiver Cam Sims, who has flashed but been inconsistent in his first two seasons.

  • DT David Bada
  • DE Jordan Brailford
  • WR Tony Brown
  • CB Aaron Colvin
  • G Joshua Garnett
  • TE Hale Hentges
  • QB Steven Montez
  • LB Jared Norris
  • DE Nate Orchard
  • LB Donald Payne
  • C Ross Pierschbacher
  • S Jeremy Reaves
  • WR Cam Sims

Each of the 13 players spent training camp with Washington and was cut during final cuts on Saturday. The most notable absent is wide receiver Trey Quinn. He opted to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad. Quinn reunites with former Washington head coach Jay Gruden, who is the Jaguars offensive coordinator this season.

Wide receiver is the most interesting position, as Washington elected to go with five on the 53-man roster. Terry McLaurin, Dontrelle Inman and Steven Sims Jr. appear locked as the top three options. Rookies Antonio Gandy-Golden and Isaiah Wright round out the group.

Meanwhile, Sims will start the season on Washington’s practice squad for the second consecutive year. Sims made the team’s roster in 2018 as an undrafted rookie. However, an ankle injury in Week 1 ended his season. Since, he has shown flashes in training camps and preseasons, using his 6-foot-5 frame to his advantage.

Yet, he has been unable to translate those flashes into consistency when games counted. He has two catches for 13 yards in five games in his NFL career.

Tony Brown joined Washington’s training camp last week. He was a corresponding move to the release of wideout Darvin Kidsy. An undrafted rookie out of Colorado, Brown was able to to earn the extended look on Washington’s practice squad in a short time.

Other notable practice squad adds include safety Jeremy Reaves. Washington cut Sean Davis after giving him a $2 million signing bonus in March. The team opted to slot unproven third-year pro Troy Apke in at free safety to start opposite of Landon Collins. Washington also opted to keep rookie Kamren Curl on the 53-man roster.

Reaves has been with the team since 2018, appearing in 11 games total and starting three last season.

Washington has four practice squad roster spots remaining to fill. This season due to the coronavirus pandemic, teams are allowed 16 players. Because, defensive tackle David Bada is part of the International Pathway Program, he does not count towards the practice squad roster. Thus, Washington is allowed to sign 17 players to their practice squad.

Note, each NFL team will be allowed to protect four practice squad players each week from being signed away by other teams this season. Also, two players are allowed to be activated to the active roster on game days, making the rosters 55 players. That player would revert back to the practice squad following the game.
