Washington Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard confirmed the team has nine players in the NBA’s health and safety protocols with six testing positive for COVID-19.
Sheppard added that four players are asymptomatic. However, two are “definitely feeling some symptoms,” according to Ben Standig of the Athletic. One of those players has felt better over the last two days.
The players who tested positive are subject to quarantine 10 to 14 days depending on their affected day.
The Wizards last played Monday, beating the Phoenix Suns before the team canceled practice Tuesday as the first two players entered the health and safety protocols. The NBA has postponed four of the Wizards games this week, including its back-to-back series with the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday and Monday.
The coronavirus outbreak, along with injuries to Russell Westbrook (oblique) and Thomas Bryant (ACL) has left the team with six healthy players. However, head coach Scott Brooks says the Wizards have not anything since the Suns game.
No team staff has tested positive for the virus. The Wizards practice facility in Southeast Washington, DC remains shut down. But the team hopes to resume practice Saturday, pending negative tests.
The Wizards’ next scheduled game is Jan. 20 against the Charlotte Hornets. It’s unclear the status of the game.
