Saturday, Virginia Tech freshman wide receiver Sean Savoy caught nine passes for 139 yards and a touchdown. It was the former Wilson (DC) High star’s best game of his short collegiate career, leading the Hokies to a 23-10 win over Boston College in their ACC season opener.
Unfortunately, Savoy did not get a chance to celebrate his great game for long. Early Monday morning, the D.C. native tweeted out his older brother, Omar, was shot and killed.

Virginia Tech’s head coach Justin Fuente offered condolences and support in a statement.
“Our hearts go out to Sean and his family on the loss of Omar,” Fuente said. “Sean is a wonderful young man and I know his teammates and the rest of the Virginia Tech community will be there to support him. We ask that Hokies everywhere keep Sean’s family in their prayers during this difficult time as we all extend our deepest condolences to them.”
Up to this point, Savoy’s first year in Blacksburg had been fruitful after an outstanding high school career with the Tigers. Following Saturday’s performance, he has 27 receptions for 337 yards and three touchdowns.
Certainly, I want to extend condolences to Savoy and his family after their troubling loss.
