Maryland Reportedly Fires AD Kevin Anderson

After seven years Kevin Anderson is out as the University of Maryland’s athletic director. Bobby Blanco of MASN was first to report Anderson’s departure.

According to Blanco, school president Wallace Loh became upset that Anderson sought after the athletic director position at the University of California where Anderson previously served an assistant and associate athletic director for five seasons.

Anderson was placed on administration leave from Maryland AD position on Oct. 1. A severance package has been negotiated that will keep him under contract through Aug. 2018. Under Armour CEO and Maryland alum Kevin Plank helped structure the package.

Anderson was hired in 2010 and was instrumental in the re-branding of the athletic department that saw it leave the Atlantic Coast Conference for the Big Ten in 2014. Since, Maryland has won a Big Ten-high 25 conference championships throughout its sports fleet and won six national championships while appearing in 11 championship games under Anderson.

Men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon, football coach D.J. Durkin, and volleyball coach Steve Aird were each hired by Anderson. The program had its highest APR scores as well as becoming one of the pioneers of offering guaranteed lifetime scholarships to athletes throughout all its Division I sports.

While there is no list of candidates publicly known, Blanco reported former legendary men’s basketball Gary Williams has been recommended by a number of boosters.
