For the second straight year Theodore Roosevelt is the king of the Stripes division of the DCIAA. The Rough Riders stunned Bell 13-12 on desperation heave from Leon Gray that landed in the hands of a sliding Kamau Stith for the game-winning touchdown on the game’s final play.
For Bell, they once again settle for a sour taste of defeat at the Gravy Bowl. It’s the fourth straight Gravy Bowl loss for Bell.
The Griffins led the entire game until the final play. They built a 12-0 lead by the second quarter. But, Roosevelt was able to cut the deficit to 12-7 with a one-yard TD run by Gray in the second quarter. Then on the game’s final drive, Gray completed three passes before spiking the ball with two seconds remaining from the 21-yard line. That’s when magic occurred.
The pass sailed over the first group of receivers, but it was Stith who got in perfect position to make the epic catch.
“You always imagine this growing up. You always see people catching game-winning touchdowns,” Stith told the Washington Post following the game. “I followed the ball, and there we go. Second ring, here we go.
The win will propel the Rough Riders to the DCIAA top-tier division, the Stars division.
