Wizards Announce G-League Team Name as ‘Capital City Go-Go’

The Washington Wizards held “Go-Go Night” on Friday as part of their concert series at the Capital One Arena. It was a fitting night for the team to announce the name of its Gatorade League team as the Capital City Go-Go.

The name is based off the genre of music in the nation’s capital, which swept through the city in the 1970s. Legends such as Chuck Brown and EU have garnered national recognition. There are local star bands such as Backyard Band, Junk Yard Band, Rare Essence and more old school groups like Lil’ Benny and the Masters and Northeast Groovers.

The logo features the word Go-Go with a conga drum in between the words with a flat basketball at the top.

The Go-Go will begin play in the 2018-19 season. The team will play in Anacostia area of Southeast D.C., on the campus formerly known as St. Elizabeth Hospital. Capital City Go-Go is a true essence of the city culture and may be the most fitting sports team name in the city that represents the living culture.

“I felt, and we felt, that we wanted to have something that was very, very connected to Anacostia and the community, and make it as D.C.-relatable as possible,” owner Ted Leonsis told Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “I think the [go-go] community really appreciates that and enjoys it and likes it, and I think it’s a good thing for Washington, D.C. Having that connection to the heritage, and doing it in a respectful way is [part of] our social responsibility of owning these teams.”

The Wizards are one of the last teams to own their own G-League development team. The Go-Go will be part of the Wizards organization move to the Anacostia area facility in D.C. The WNBA’s Mystics and Go-Go will be co-tenants of the new St. Elizabeth’s East Entertainment and Sports Arena. The Wizards will move its offices as well practice at the complex.
