Redskins Re-Sign ILB Mason Foster to Two-year Deal

The contract status of QB Kirk Cousins and ILB Zach Brown have dominated the off-season talk of the Washington Redskins. However, one position that needs to be filled just as equally is Mike linebacker. The Redskins had three different players man the position in 2017 due to a rash of injuries, and all three contracts expired at season end.

With the Redskins trying to retool more than rebuild, they made a move to secure at least one of those Mikes by re-signing Mason Foster to a two-year deal.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Foster’s agent says the deal is worth a maximum of $7 million.

In 2017, Foster shifted to Mike from the Mo position after the signing of Brown. Foster beat out Will Compton for the starting spot. He started four games. However, suffered a separated shoulder in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams. He left the game but returned in the second half and recorded a game-clinching interception in a gusty effort.

However, he was diagnosed with a torn labrum effectively three games later ending his season. He later criticized the Redskins front office following the decision to place him on IR. Shortly afterwards, he met with team president Bruce Allen to clear the air.

Compton slid into the starting spot. Unfortunately for the Redskins, the injury bug claimed Compton as well with a foot injury forcing Washington to sign Zach Vigil to play the final six games of the season.

Foster finished the season with 30 tackles and 0.5 sacks to go with his interception in five games.

Foster joins Martrell Spaight and Josh Harvey-Clemons as the only Redskins inside linebackers signed to contracts. Brown, Compton, and Vigil have yet to reach deals with the team as free agency looms.
