The Maryland Terrapins’ stay in New York City is over already. The Terrapins fell in their first game of the Big Ten Tournament to Wisconsin 59-54. Kevin Huerter scored a game-high 20 points and Anthony Cowan added 16 points and four assists. Unfortunately, that was not enough to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive. Maryland is now 2-4 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament, and this is their second straight one-and-done appearances in the conference tournament.
Fade in Closing Moments: After Huerter tied the game at 53-53 with just over one minute to play, Maryland had an opportunity to grab control. Out of a timeout, the Terrapins forced two missed long-range threes. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure the rebound on either shot, as the Badgers came away with two offensive rebounds on one trip.
The second landed in Ethan Happ’s hand and after a timeout, Wisconsin finally took advantage as Brevin Pritzl knocked down a jumper to give the Badgers the lead for good at 55-53. Maryland tried to answer as Huerter was fouled shooting. However, he missed one of two free throws with 9.2 seconds remaining.
Wisconsin was able to get ball into the hands of Brad Davison’s hands, an 82.1 percent free throw shooter, of the inbounds. Davison made both free throws. Maryland still had a shot down 57-54. But, Wisconsin’s Khalil Iverson stole the inbounds pass from Dion Wiley to seal the deal.
Key Stats: Neither team shot the ball well. Wisconsin shot just 36 percent from the field. They went 9:20 without a made field goal in the first half. Yet, the Terrapins were unable to capitalize, as they shot a dismal 2-of-14 from three. Maryland also had 12 turnovers, and their inability to break down Wisconsin’s defense resulted in just nine free throws attempts. Wisconsin in contrast shot 20-of-24 from the charity stripe.
What’s Next: Maryland’s early exit coupled with an early date for the Big Ten Tournament leaves the Terrapins idle for the next two weeks. With a 19-13 record, all signs point to a trip to the NIT. This will be the first time since 2013-14, the Terrapins missed the NCAA Tournament. However, it is the fourth time in seven seasons under Turgeon, the Terps will not be dancing in the NCAA’s.
