Bashaud Breeland Won’t Sign with Carolina Panthers after Failing Physical with Injured Foot

Bashaud Breeland, who agreed to a three-year deal worth $24 million, will not be signing with the Carolina Panthers after all. Breeland failed a team physical, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Breeland becomes the second former Washington Redskins player to fail a physical after agreeing to a deal with another team. Ryan Grant failed his physical with the Baltimore Ravens, voiding a four-year deal worth $29 million.

For Breeland his situation is more concerning and could prevent him from signing with any team in the near future. According to David Newton of ESPN, Breeland has an infected cut on his foot that he suffered in the Dominican Republic earlier this month.

Cornerback Bashaud Breeland told me he cut the back of his left foot while in the Dominican Republic on March 4th. Said he will need to have skin grafted to repair the injury as he did when first injured in the fourth grade. He didn’t believe the injury to be serious, that he could still walk on it. He said it never was an issue through high school, college or while with the Redskins.

The procedure will prevent Breeland from passing a physical for “a few months,” according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Breeland spent four seasons with the Redskins after being drafted in the fourth round in the 2014 NFL Draft. A quality starter, he was looking for his big payday after coming off his rookie contract. Unfortunately, a freak set of events has cost him millions of dollars for the time being.

For the Panthers, they will be back on the market for a quality starting cornerback that they’ve been searching for since rescinding a franchise tag on star Josh Norman back in 2016. Coincidentally, Norman signed with the Redskins to play opposite of Breeland.

Meanwhile, with free agent signing winding down both Breeland and the Panthers will have to turn to their Plan B’s. Washington had targeted Breeland for a return prior to him agreeing to the deal with the Panthers. It’s unknown at the time, if the Redskins’ interest remains with the latest development.
