Capitals History when Leading a Playoff Series 3-1 Is Enough to Make Fans Nervous

The Washington Capitals enjoy a 3-1 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final after their impressive 6-2 win in Game 4 against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. While they’ve been dominant much of the series, keep in mind the Capitals still need to win one more before they can hoist the franchise’s first Stanley Cup. With the series shifting to Las Vegas for Game 5, here’s a reminder that should keep the Capitals focused to finish the job and close the series.

The Capitals have lost five series in their team history when leading a postseason series 3-1. That’s the most of any team in NHL history.

Granted, this team has put away demons of the past all postseason. They overcame a 2-0 series hole in the first-round to topple Columbus. They finally overcame their arch nemesis, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the second round, clinching the series in Pittsburgh. In doing so, the Capitals advanced to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in 20 years. They then overcame being on the brink of elimination by winning Game 6 at home and Game 7 on the road against Tampa to advance to their first Stanley Cup Final in 20 years.

Overcoming demons has been the theme of the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup campaign. One more win puts to rest all of them for good, however, until the final horn signals a championship their history with 3-1 series leads is yet another reminder of what has been for the Washington Capitals.
