Max Scherzer is arguably the best starting pitcher in Major League Baseball right now. He has been the National League’s Cy Young for two years in a row, and he may be working his way towards a third. On Friday against the Miami Marlins, the Washington Nationals’ ace collected his 200th strikeout for the seventh straight season, joining him in an elite company.

Scherzer became the fourth pitcher in MLB history to accomplish seven straight seasons with 200 strikeouts. He ties Walter Johnson and Roger Clemens for the second longest streak in the league’s history. Only Tom Seaver has more with nine straight seasons.

Scherzer mowed down the Marlins in eight innings of work, striking out 11 batters and holding Miami to one unearned run in route to the Nationals’ 9-1 win. Scherzer accomplished the feat on his 34th birthday.

With the 11 strikeouts, Scherzer now has 75 career games with 10 or more strikeouts, moving him to eighth-most in MLB history.

While the Nationals have struggled this season with a 52-51 record and reports suggest they may be sellers ahead of this year’s trade deadline, Scherzer has been the consistent for Washington. With the win on Friday, he improved his win-loss record to 14-5 with a 2.30 ERA.
