Back in May DeAngelo Hall essentially retired from playing football. On Wednesday the former Virginia Tech star and Washington Redskins mainstay officially wrapped up his career in a press conference in Richmond at the Redskins training camp.
“I’m sure you heard months ago, but after 14 seasons of professional football I will be officially retiring today,” Hall announced per Chad Ryan of Redskins Connection.
Hall played his final 10 season in the burgundy and gold with the Redskins after an eventful first four-plus seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and eventually the Oakland Raiders. He struggled on and off the field with his attitude that resulted in the Raiders releasing him midway through the first year of a seven-year $70 million contract.Ā The Redskins picked him up shortly and the Chesapeake, Va. native found his NFL home.
He played in 106 games with the Redskins, recording 23 of his 43 career interceptions while in Washington’s uniform. He had one of his three Pro Bowl seasons with Washington. One of his most memorable moments occurred during a Week 7 match-up in 2010 in which Hall tied the NFL record with four interceptions, including a 92-yard pick-six, during a Redskins’ 17-14 win over the Chicago Bears. All four interceptions came off the embattled Jay Cutler.
During his retirement announcement, Hall reminded everyone of that game throwing shade at Cutler in the process.
“If I could’ve played against Jay Cutler more, I’d probably be in the Hall of Fame,” Hall proclaimed per Craig Hoffman of 106.7 the Fan.
Hall also thanked former Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan for helping challenging him to change his persona and become a leader. He also thanked team president Bruce Allen for bringing him back to the team towards the end of his career while he battled through injuries that ultimately slowed his playing.
Hall suffered a ruptured left Achilles in 2014, ending his season after three games. He missed five games in 2015 while struggling with a toe injury. In 2016, he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during a Week 3 game against the New York Giants. Last season he appeared in five games after starting the season on the physically unable to perform list. In his last three seasons following his initial torn Achilles, Hall appeared in 19 games total.
āFather Time catches up to us all,” Hall so perfectly explained per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.
Hall says it was a childhood dream to play for nearby Virginia Tech, be a huge fan of Redskins legendary cornerback Darrell Green, and play 10 seasons with the Redskins. He plans to do both national and regional television work in his post-retirement. He has recently made appearances on various media outlets, including NFL Network and ESPN.
The Redskins shared their thanks on social media.
