Redskins RB Chris Thompson Ruled Out for Preseason Opener vs. Patriots

Chris Thompson avoided starting training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, however, the Redskins running back admitted he won’t feel 100 percent healthy until November. Now as the Redskins prepare for their preseason opener against the New England Patriots, head coach Jay Gruden made the media aware Thompson will not play.

Thompson suffered a fractured fibula last November after having his leg rolled on by then-quarterback Kirk Cousins as he was being tackled against the New Orleans Saints.

Thompson to that point was the Redskins’ most productive offensive weapon, registering 804 yards from scrimmage on 111 touches and six touchdowns, rushing and receiving.

As the Redskins retool their offense with newly acquired quarterback Alex Smith, wide receiver Paul Richardson, and second-round pick running back Derrius Guice, Thompson is expected to complement a very talented offense that includes Jamison Crowder and tight end Jordan Reed.

Thompson will play eventually but no need to rush him back during a meaningless preseason game for him. There will be time for him to become more acclimated with his new Redskins teammates and test out his surgically repaired leg.
