The Washington Redskins injury bug continues, as defensive end Matt Ioannidis will miss two to three weeks with a knee injury, according to Matthew Paras of the Washington Times.
Ioannidis suffered the injury in the first half of Thursday’s preseason opener against the New England Patriots. The injury occurred after he recovered a sack.
Ioannidis has blossomed into a key part to the Redskins defensive line and had a strong season in 2017 recording 27 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 14 games despite fracturing his hand.
He has been penciled in as a starter along side Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne along the Redskins defensive line. Being out of action won’t affect his place in the rotation but will keep him off the field for reps.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden following Washington’s 26-17 loss to the Patriots that Ioannidis would not have played as long as he did except the fact the Redskins were thin on the defensive line. Stacey McGee started camp on the physically unable to perform list and Payne is recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in training camp.
Ioannidis’ injury news comes in wake of the devastating news that rookie running back and pegged starter Derrius Guice suffered a torn ACL in Thursday’s game and will be out for the season.
