The Washington Redskins’ deepest position of talent entering training camp has quickly become its least healthy position in a matter of two preseason games. In addition to losing Derrius Guice for the season and Byron Marshall reportedly for two-to-four weeks with an ankle injury, fellow running back Samaje Perine is expected to miss some time, “likely a week at least” according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Perine, the Redskins’ leading rusher in 2017, suffered the ankle injury on his only carry in Thursday’s preseason game against the New York Jets. Perine ripped off a 30-yard run behind a solid block from tight end J.P. Holtz, but Perine hobbled to the sideline and did not return to the game.

Perine was expected by many to assume a significant role in the Redskins backfield in place of the injured Guice. With Guice, Marshall, and Perine out, Washington may be in dire need of adding bodies at running back to get through the preseason.

Robert Kelley, last season’s Week 1 starter, has struggled to get off in two preseason games and is returning after an ankle and knee injury cut short his 2017 campaign. Meanwhile, Chris Thompson, the Redskins’ lead all-purpose back, is coming back from a broken leg suffered late last season. Thompson has already stated he will not feel 100 percent until at least November. The Redskins’ are surely to hope Perine’s injury does not linger past the conclusion of the preseason because they’ll need him to be part of their running back equation early in the season.
