The Washington Redskins are already thin at running back with hopes of getting healthier soon, however, head coach Jay Gruden admitted Sunday following practice that they could lose another back to a season-ending injury. Initially reports suggested Byron Marshall could miss two to four weeks with an ankle injury, however, Gruden admitted Marshall could end up going on injured reserve, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

Gruden said he hoped that Marshall’s ailment won’t hamper him that long. Gruden was not clear on if he meant short-term IR which would allow Marshall to rejoin the active roster after eight weeks or the season-ending IR.
Marshall was expected to be a kick returner as well as be a capable receiving back to go behind Chris Thompson, who is working his way back from a broken leg suffered last season. Marshall was signed to the Redskins last season after the team was hit with a rash of injuries at running back.
However, he was injured on his second and final carry in Thursday’s preseason game against the New York Jets. Marshall had replaced Samaje Perine, who limped off the field after his first and only carry of the game with an ankle injury.
The Redskins have already started working out free agent running backs, including the Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa, with Adrian Peterson reportedly scheduled to work out.
