A rash of injuries at running back was not enough to save Martez Carter’s job another week, as the Washington Redskins waived Carter with an injury designation.

Carter was the leading rusher in Thursday’s 15-13 preseason win over the New York Jets with 45 yards on seven carries. He did not appear to be injured during the game. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden state that Carter hurt his leg in the game.

“He was [absent]. We waived him pending a physical and all that stuff as injured,” Gruden said per Hogs Haven. “We waived him injured. He was injured in the game. He hurt his leg.”

Carter’s dismissal now leaves the Redskins with Robert Kelley and Kapri Bibbs as the only two fully healthy running backs on the roster. Chris Thompson has been getting individual work as he recovers to return from a broken leg he suffered last November.

Samaje Perine is expected to miss at least one week with an ankle injury and Byron Marshall is reportedly out two to four weeks with an ankle injury of his own. Both Perine and Marshall were injured against the Jets. Second-round draft pick Derrius Guice is out for the season after tearing his ACL in the preseason opener last week against the New England Patriots.

In addition to cutting Carter, the Redskins waived linebacker Jeff Knox and defensive end Jalen Wilkerson while signing offensive tackle Kendall Calhoun, defensive back Darius Hilary and wide receiver Allenzae Staggers.
