Just about everything went right for the Washington Redskins in their dominating 24-6 win over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday. That is except for injuries to two of their rookie wide receivers. Seventh-round pick Trey Quinn and undrafted free agent Cam Sims both suffered ankle injuries and did not return to the game. Each are now set to undergo an MRI on Monday, head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged following the game, per Craig Hoffman of 106.7 the Fan.
Sims, who made the 53-man roster despite not being drafted out of Alabama, was hurt on the opening kickoff. Certainly it was a devastating debut for him as he worked so hard to make the roster only to have his day cut short after one play.
Quinn, Mr. Irrelevant for being the last pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, got injured on a third quarter-punt return. The SMU product appeared to land wrong while getting tackled near the sidelines on a 12-yard return. He immediately grabbed his ankle as he landed on the turf.
After trainers attended to him he was assisted to the medical tent and was listed as questionable for the game, however, he was later downgraded to out and carted off to the locker room. Quinn finished the game with two returns for 12 yards.
The Redskins were already short-handed at wide receiver with Maurice Harris being ruled out of Sunday’s game with a concussion. Quinn and Sims were set to split time being the fourth receiver in Harris’ place. Following the game Gruden admitted they had sub-packages to use both throughout game.
X-rays were apparently negative on both Sims and Quinn, so now the Redskins will have to wait and hope for the best for their health. Washington could be down to three healthy wide receivers on their 53-man roster. They also have undrafted rookie Simmie Cobbs Jr. on the practice squad.
During Sunday’s slate of Week 1 games, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant tweeted hints that he would like to play for the Redskins as well as the New England Patriots. But first thing’s first, the health and well-being of two rookie wideouts that the Redskins are counted on having significant roles heading into the season.
