Before the Washington Redskins reportedly signed wide receiver Breshad Perriman, the team was in the mix for wide receiver Josh Gordon. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Redskins were involved in trade talks with the Cleveland Browns before the Browns traded Gordon to the New England Patriots for a conditional fifth-round pick.

Adam Schefter of ESPN adds the Browns wanted to send Gordon to an NFC team. The Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers were other notable suitors for Gordon. In the end go the spoilers as Gordon goes to winning culture such as the Patriots, who have appeared in the last two Super Bowls.

Meanwhile, the Redskins will try to work with a 2015 first-round bust that struggled through three seasons with injuries and lack of confidence before being cut lose earlier this month by the Baltimore Ravens. Gordon comes with his own heavy baggage, considering his struggles and repeated violations of the the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Speculation to his trade from Cleveland stems from a series of questionable moves including suspicion of substance abuse again.

Still Michael Jenkins of NBC Sports Washington said it best about the Redskins missing out on Gordon and signing Perriman.

The Redskins needed to add depth at wide receiver and while no word on what compensation was offered to the Browns, it for whatever reasons did not trump the Patriots. Only time will tell if the Redskins’ consolation prize is a blessing in disguise or not.
