Redskins Release Breshad Perriman to Sign Kapri Bibbs from Practice Squad

With Robert Kelley being placed on injured reserve, the Redskins needed a running back on the active 53-man roster. Saturday the team signed Kapri Bibbs from the practice squad, releasing wide receiver Breshad Perriman to make room on the roster.

Perriman was signed earlier this week shortly after the Redskins missed out on Josh Gordon to New England. However, the team also signed wide receiver Michael Floyd and with just three active running backs, Perriman was expedenable.

It’s not clear if Bibbs will be active for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, as Washington has Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, and Samaje Perine. Perine was made inactive for the first two weeks with Kelley healthy, so there’s a chance Washington continues the trend by having just three running backs among the 46 players activated for the game.

Bibbs unlike Perine can contribute in special teams. The Redskins special teams took a hit with the injuries to Trey Quinn and Cam Sims, both of which or on IR. Whether it’s return punts in place of Quinn or playing gunner like Sims, Bibbs can fit in as well as on field goal blocks.

Bibbs was part of the final cuts before the start of the season, but was immediately signed to the practice squad. If active he also provides a spell at third down and receiving back for Chris Thompson. Running backs have been hard hit with injuries, as Derrius Guice, Byron Marshall, and Kelley are each on injured reserve — Guice is out for the season.

The Redskins could bring Perriman back but right now they have enough wide receivers and not enough running backs, so it was a numbers game for Washington.
