Ty Johnson Becomes Fourth Player in Maryland History to Eclipse 4,000 Yards with 65-Yard TD Run

Ty Johnson has had one of the more decorated careers in recent Maryland football history. On Saturday playing against Rutgers, the senior running back broke away for a 65-yard touchdown for the first score of the game. With that run, he also became the fourth Terrapin to gain 4,000 all-purpose yards in program history.

Johnson, who took a 98-yard kick return to the end zone last week against Michigan, has been the definition of a home-run runner. Any one of his touches has the threat of going the distance and he can alter the complexion of a game in a blink.

Johnson joins a pretty elite list among Maryland’s program. Each of the previous three players in the 4,000-yard club play or played on Sunday’s and gave an impact in some way to his team’s success, running back Lamont Jordan and wide receivers Torrey Smith and Stefon Diggs who are both currently primary receivers on their respective NFL teams. Playing on Sundays should be in Johnson’s future as well.

Before Saturday’s game, Johnson averaged 7.8 yards per touch from the line of scrimmage. His big touchdown run against Rutgers was even more amazing considering he suffered an undisclosed injury, presumably a leg or knee injury late in the game against Michigan and was listed as questionable for this week.
