The Washington Redskins may be without two of its biggest contributors on offense when they take the field Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, both running back Chris Thompson and Jamison Crowder are expected to not play Sunday. Head coach Jay Gruden had previously stated both along with Adrian Peterson and Josh Doctson were going to be game-time decisions.

Crowder did not practice all week while dealing with an ankle injury. Maurice Harris is expected to replace Crowder in the slot. Meanwhile, Doctson (heel) and fellow receiver Paul Richardson (shoulder/knee) were limited in practice, making for an interesting situation for the Redskins that could possibly see all three of their starting wide outs out versus Carolina.

Michael Floyd and Brian Quick are the other wide receivers on the roster and either or both could see an increase in workload with the position banged up.

Nevertheless, Thompson may be the hardest pill to swallow for the Redskins. Thompson injured his ribs and knee. He did take a tough shot trying to catch a pass from Alex Smith in a tight window on a failed two-point conversion in the fourth quarter of Monday’s 43-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He was limited in practice this week.

With Peterson dealing with shoulder, ankle, and knee injuries, losing Thompson could sting the most. Thompson is an integral part of the Redskins’ passing game. Thompson has 26 receptions on 31 targets for 200 yards — he leads the Redskins in all three categories. He is also the Redskins’ best pass protector. With him out they’ll have to lean more on Kapri Bibbs and just may have to bring Samaje Perine out of Gruden’s doghouse.
