Maryland cornerback Marcus Lewis has left the football program for “personal reasons,” according to InsideMDSports.com.
Lewis arrived at Maryland after transferring from Florida State. He previously starred at Gonzaga (D.C.) becoming a highly-touted four-star recruit. He initially committed to play for Virginia Tech but then flipped to Florida before signing with Florida State. He appeared in 12 games in the two seasons with the Seminoles.
When he was set to transfer from Florida State, he turned to then-head coach DJ Durkin, who was an assistant coach at Florida and had recruited him at the program he flipped from Virginia Tech. This season Lewis appeared in five games for the Terrapins, collecting 11 tackles and two pass defenses.
With his departure, RaVon Davis is expected to fill in at starting cornerback with Rayshad Lewis serving as the backup.
Marcus Lewis had missed a game earlier this season due to personal reasons and suffered what was described as a minor injury. It’s unclear if he will continue his playing career moving forward, according to the report.
Lewis is the second defensive back to leave the program this week. Qwauntrezz Knight announced he was transferring from the program, leaving Maryland thin in the defensive backfield. Both departures come in the wake of the firing of Durkin, who was placed on administrative leave in August following two investigations stemming from the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair during a May workout and allegations of a “toxic” culture within the program then reinstated and then fired one day later.
It’s unclear if Durkin’s dismissal played any role in Lewis’ decision.
