The Redskins continue to deal with injury woes, as running back Chris Thompson has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden made the announcement after Thursday’s practice per Craig Hoffman of 106.7 the Fan.

Thompson continues to deal with a rib injury that caused him to miss three of the previous four games. It’s an injury Thompson first suffered late in the fourth quarter of a Week 5 loss to the New Orleans Saints when he was hit on a high-sailing pass from quarterback Alex Smith. That along with a knee injury held him out of the next two games. He returned in Week 8 against the New York Giants, but he suffered an injury to the opposite side rib in the win. He missed last week’s loss to Atlanta.

Thompson, who suffered a broken fibula last year, was expected to be an ideal fit with Smith, as a receiver out of the backfield. However, injuries have hampered him this season and now he is set to miss his fourth game of the season. Thompson has 322 yards from scrimmage on 54 touches and one touchdown for the season and has been limited to 174 snaps.

Kapri Bibbs will continue to fill in Thompson’s role, backing up starter Adrian Peterson on Sunday. Bibbs has averaged 23.3 snaps in the three previous games he has played in absence of Thompson. Bibbs has 120 yards from scrimmage on 19 touches and three touchdowns on the season.

As for Byron Marshall, Gruden said barring any setbacks the running back won’t be activated to the 53-man roster until next week.

Being without Thompson adds to the Redskins’ injury woes, as Washington will be without left tackle Trent Williams (thumb), left guard Shawn Lauvao (torn ACL), and right guard Brandon Scherff (torn pectoral). Both Lauvao and Scherff are out for the remainder of the season.
