Josh Johnson was in Oakland, California playing in a softball celebrity game when he got word the Washington Redskins were interested in signing the quarterback. He was brought in to be a backup to Mark Sanchez — the third quarterback to start for the Redskins this season.

Johnson had to get up to speed with just learning his new teammates’ names so he played Madden to learn his Redskins’ teammates names, per Brian McNally of NBC Sports Washington.

One has to forgive Johnson for needing the video game to catch up on the names of the players on the roster. He wasn’t officially signed until Wednesday and Washington has 17 players on injured reserve with additional four players who were held out of Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants.

Johnson entered the game in the third quarter throwing for 195 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Additionally, he rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown after Redskins head coach Jay Gruden benched Sanchez with the team down 40-0.

Johnson will start at quarterback for the Redskins when they travel to face the Jacksonville Jaguars next week. He will get a full week of preparation to get acquainted with his new teammates as well as the Gruden’s playbook.
