Austin Rivers will become a free agent after the Phoenix Suns agreed to waive the veteran guard, as both parties concluded Rivers is a better fit on an older team contending for the playoffs, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Rivers will go through waivers and once he does will be free to sign with any team in the NBA. He was in the final year of his contract worth that would pay him $12.6 million. That will be bought out by Phoenix.
The Suns traded Trevor Ariza to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Kelly Oubre and Rivers Monday.
Rivers, who was traded this summer from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Wizards for Marcin Gortat, struggled in his time with Washington. He failed to adjust playing alongside ball dominant guards John Wall and Bradley Beal. He averaged 7.2 points and two assists while shooting a dismal 39.2 percent from the field and 31.1 percent from three-point range in 29 games with the Wizards this season.
There are no imminent destinations for the 26-year old, but there should be interest from teams when he becomes available.
