The Washington Capitals collected their ninth win in 10 games after holding off the Ottawa Senators 3-2 Saturday. A pair of the Capitals’ young defensemen accomplished a rare feat in the win, as both Madison Bowey and Tyler Lewington scored their first career NHL goals.
It’s just the 19th time in the history of the league, two defensemen teammates scored their first career NHL goals in the same game. The first time in Capitals’ history.
Lewington was the first of the pair to score, as he fired a wrister past Senators goalie Marcus Hogberg in the second period off a drop-off dish from Nicklas Backstrom.
Lewington, who already registered his first career assist on a Tom Wilson goal earlier in the second, collected a Gordie Howe hattrick after getting into a fight 15:36 into the third period with Senators Zack Smith.
As for Bowey, he scored his in the third extending the Capitals’ lead to 3-0. He had all the time in the world before ripping a wrister past Hogberg.
Bowey too got into a fight with Brady Tkachuk.
Two goals, one assist, and two fights. Not bad for the pair of youngsters having fun on a Stanley Cup-winning veteran team.
However, their night wasn’t over without a little celebration brought on by Wilson while both conducted interviews following their impressive night.
Bowey got chocolate shake for his efforts. Meanwhile, Lewington got shaving cream.
With the Capitals banged up some at defensemen with Christian Djoos and Matt Niskanen suffering injuries most recently, the organization got a glimpse of their future with Lewington and Bowey’s impressive night. December 30, 2018 will surely be a day to remember for both young defensemen.
