The Washington Redskins’ coaching staff still seems influx on the defense. Greg Manusky officially remains the defensive coordinator, as candidate Gregg Williams ultimately chose to finalize deal with the New York Jets.
The Redskins had hoped to convince Williams to sign with them before finalizing the deal with the Jets, however, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports, that’s now a done deal. There is no word if the Redskins were able to get a meeting, but it seems the interest in him may have helped along the Jets’ deal.
Manusky has not been removed from the defensive coordinator position in Washington which leaves the situation more perplexing. In addition, it seems that former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods is still in play for joining the Redskins’ defensive staff, according to Mike Klis of KUSA.
Woods is seemingly deciding over whether to sign with the Redskins or the Arizona Cardinals as a defensive backs coach. It’s unclear what role he would have in Washington either the defensive backs coach position or defensive coordinator.
Torrian Gray reportedly has been removed from the Redskins defensive backs coach position, however, it’s unclear if he has been fired or if he is part of a more grand scheme situation that may land him as the defensive coordinator and Woods as the DB coach. Meanwhile, Manusky could be demoted to outside linebackers coach.
The confusing situation is all speculation at this point. But the matter fits the Redskins, as they have been full of drama at every turn. Manusky appears to be an insurance policy in case they cannot land a preferred candidate. And we’ll just have to wait and see how Woods and/or Gray fits in the grand scheme.
