The Washington Redskins promoted Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator Tuesday. At the age of 33, the former NFL quarterback is viewed as one of the innovative offensive minds. Carolina Panthers wide receiver Torrey Smith seconded the notion with complimenting tweet.

Calling O’Connell the next Sean McVay is as high of a praise as any offensive coordinator can receive these days. McVay is one of, if not the best, young offensive minds in the league right now. Also 33 years of age, McVay has guided the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in just two seasons as their head coach. His success comes on the heels of blossoming as the Redskins’ offensive coordinator prior.

Smith played with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 when O’Connell was the 49ers quarterbacks coach. Smith doubled down his support when questioned by a user on Twitter.

The Redskins appear to agree, as O’Connell was a target of other teams for their offensive coordinator position, according to John Keim of ESPN.com. After two seasons as the team’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, O’Connell will get the opportunity to showcase his abilities.
