Despite the change at offensive coordinator, head coach Jay Gruden will continue to call offensive plays for the Washington Redskins according to team president Bruce Allen.
Allen said Gruden’s decision to promote Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator was “to get some new thinking and fresh thinking into the offense.”
Matt Cavanaugh served as the offensive coordinator the past two seasons after the departure of Sean McVay in 2017. However, Gruden called plays much to the chagrin of fans. That apparently will continue to be the case with O’Connell in the position.
John Keim of ESPN.com elaborated that his sources say that could change and eventually O’Connell will call plays. O’Connell did call plays while Mark Sanchez replaced Colt McCoy at quarterback in a Week 13 game against Philadelphia after McCoy suffered a fractured fibula.
Until told otherwise, it’s safe to assume Gruden will call plays going into 2019. Could that change at some point during the season, possibly, if the team struggles, but otherwise, don’t hope for it.
