With uncertainty surrounding the health and playing future of quarterback Alex Smith, the Washington Redskins are presumably in need of finding options in place of him. One of those options appears to be veteran journeyman Josh Johnson.
Team president Bruce Allen told JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, the team is working to bring back Johnson.
Johnson was signed in December by the Redskins after season-ending injuries to both Smith and Colt McCoy. Johnson played in four games, starting the last three of the season for Washington.
He completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 590 yards and three touchdowns against four interceptions. He added 120 yards and one touchdown rushing.
He looked solid in his first two games of action, including his first start against the Jacksonville Jaguars in which he went 16-of-25 for 151 yards and touchdown pass in a 16-13 win to keep the Redskins’ playoff hopes alive. However his play tapered off in the final two starts, both losses to conclude the season in which he threw one touchdown and three interceptions against Tennessee and Philadelphia combined.
Still, he showed some promise playing under head coach Jay Gruden who he had familiarity with from their time together in Tampa and Cincinnati. Bringing Johnson back to enter the off-season activities is a smart play with the team searching for solutions in the absence of Smith.
