Alex Ovechkin is stating his case as the most prolific goal scorer in NHL history. Friday, he knotted his 45th goal of the 2018-19 season, as the Washington Capitals topped the New York Islanders 3-1.
Ovechkin scored off a redirection in mid-air to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. He has now scored 45 goals in 10 seasons, becoming the first player in NHL history to do so.
The goal was also his 106th game-winner of his career, pushing him into seventh all-time in league history.
With 81 points, the win pushed the Capitals into a virtual tie with Islanders for first-place in the Metropolitan Division. Both teams have 37 wins and 34 regulation/overtime wins, while the Islanders have played one less game and have one less loss.
At the age of 37, Ovechkin leads the NHL in goals as he makes a campaign for his eighth Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy which is already the most in NHL history.
